Perry is a Chicago native birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. Perry did not decide to pursue acting as a career after reaching adulthood because her parents were concerned about the adverse impact stress might cause. Perry states that she did not want to be an actor in high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity while at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry made her debut in New York after graduation, landing minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as a stage actress. She performed on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, she had a minor role on ABC's thriller about politics Scandal which starred her father. She played the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The character was chosen by auditions, even though she had a close association with it.
