
He entered the National Theatre School of Denmark at the age of 27. He graduated in 1995. He was also featured in The Killing, a drama series which was broadcast across the world. He then appeared in Borgen III and Those Who Kill Two internationally highly acclaimed Danish dramas. He also played a prominent role in an episode of the BBC drama Sherlock as the blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. In the American television series House of Cards, he played the role of the president of Russia. In 2018, he took home an International Emmy Award for his character as the president of Russia on the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. It was broadcast in the UK in the year 2019. According to Mikkelsen's story the actor was taught English from his brother by listening to Monty Python recordings and watching the sketches of comedy.
